About the Authors
Jessy and Mischa Livingstone:
Jessy and Mischa are partners in teaching, writing, filmmaking, marriage, and parenthood. Their fully enmeshed existence has inspired a wide spectrum of creative work, running the gamut from music videos to documentaries, experimental films to fiction, and ad campaigns to guerrilla artwork.
They have nurtured hundreds of students, some of whom can claim the honor of being “Livingstoned,” having been taught by each of them.
Two decades of collaboration are the key ingredient to their creative pursuits and professional achievements. This OER stems from their lifelong commitment to the art of conversation, to asking questions and seeking answers, and to seamless collaboration and endless curiosity.

Vanessa Newell (Illustrator):
Vanessa Newell is an award-winning filmmaker, artist, and recovering film editor whose real love is putting pen to paper. Her illustrations—wry, snarky, and occasionally side-eyeing humanity—capture everything from her mood to the absurdity of everyday life. Her short films have played at festivals worldwide, racking up awards along the way. When she’s not drawing, making movies, or raising a little hell at protests, she’s teaching film production and media & gender studies in Los Angeles.
Her greatest passions? Social justice and monster movies—preferably together, because who says you can’t save the world while fighting off a giant monster?
