In a digital world where everything is searchable (and knowledge depends on how good your search terms are), this book is not looking to teach you everything. There are many resources out there that do a much deeper dive on every topic broached here.

However, this text is designed to help you frame your questions and to give you a vocabulary that will help you find answers. It is designed to provide you with a set of tools to help you express yourself to the best of your ability.

That expression, both visual and aural, requires an understanding of the artistic and technical processes of filmmaking. It is those methods that we aim to explore, because if you understand the approaches at work, you can figure out how to say everything you want to say.

Wherever you live, whoever you are, whatever resources you have available to you, you can say something important with this medium. The key is to figure out how you want to say it.
