Spoilers Ahead

In this chapter you will learn:

  • What the creative process is.
  • How to define content and form.
  • What the various categories of filmmaking are.

Reading the following chapters will forever change the way you perceive film, television, and all other media you consume.

Proceed with caution!

Up until now, you have been a member of the general movie/television/streaming audience. You have sat comfortably in the dark, enjoying the spectacle on the screen and passively accepting its magic.

As you have watched, you have felt a myriad of emotions. Hope, longing, dread, delight, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

All of these emotions have been elicited by the images on the screen and the sounds accompanying them, neither of which required anything of you but to watch and listen.

But have you ever wondered how it all works?

As an artist, you must understand the medium with which you are creating. To do that, you must first deconstruct it into its parts. Then, by understanding the individual pieces, you will be able to use them effectively.

Have you ever taken a clock apart to see how it works? This is precisely what we are going to do.

By deconstructing the medium of filmmaking, you will discover the secrets that make it work, the clever methods through which emotion is created, and how you can adopt those methods to say something powerful to others.
