The Beginning of Something Else

Hello again!

You made it through our entire book! Well done.

We hope that your head is spinning with all the questions that you never thought to ask. Questions you never knew existed. May each question lead to a new question.

Your questions are the beginning of a conversation you will have for the rest of your life, a conversation that will never grow old and will keep evolving. You will discover a great deal about the human condition by engaging in this conversation. You might even find that you have an understanding about a world so complex that it can only be expressed cinematically.

We guarantee that, in time, you will know how to convert amps to watts, how to wrap an XLR cable, and how to load a grip truck the right way. These will be the easy answers that will become second nature with time, experience, and expertise.

More importantly, though, we hope you keep finding new answers to these two key questions:

  • What story must you tell?
  • What emotion must you share?

Asking these questions will provide you with endless possibilities and new opportunities to learn. They will give you deep insight and always challenge you. They will keep you humble, curious, and open.

Build a broad base of reference and, with it, the ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Make films that will force the audience to think, question, feel, and connect.

Make a bunch of bad films so you can make one that is truly worthy of their time, a film that allows people to see beyond their perception and share in the delight of a collective experience.

Work hard to earn the trust of your audience.

Work hard to earn the trust of your colleagues.

Do your best, and be generous with your time. Every project you work on will make you better, add to your humanity, and increase your wisdom.

Work with people who are more skilled than you. Lift those who are still learning.

Embrace being both a student and a teacher.

Continue the conversation.

Enjoy the ride.
