The Grove of Giants: Open Voices, Just Choices Speaker Series

Like the mighty sequoia trees of California, many leaders in open education have nurtured open education into the variable forest of open textbooks, authors, projects, associations, and conferences that we know today. A number of these mighty giants shared their wisdom through the Open Voices, Just Choices speaker series.

Meggie Mapes shared how her first OER quickly propelled her into a companion open pedagogy project. Liza Long and Reed Hepler demonstrated the perils and advantages of leveraging AI to co-create OER with students. Surita Jhangiani imparted how to integrate and assess student perceptions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism (DEIA) in OER using principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Finally, David Wiley took us to the frontier of OER, reminding us that open pedagogy and effective assessments are essential seeds to improving student learning, while embracing AI will sustain OER.
