Reaching the Summit: Publishing

Profile of hiker on mountain and text "Scaling New Peaks with OER".

You have surmounted the lows and scaled the highs of creating an OER. At this point, you may think you have lost sight of the summit, but do not doubt yourself. The disorienting clouds that surround you are a signal that you have reached the summit of your OER creation: the publishing process. This section is intended to guide you through polishing your OER. We provide step-by-step guidance and resources for pre- and post-publication work.

First, you will pause and reflect at the top of your mountain and thank and acknowledge your community of support in the front matter. Then take a picture of the vista and post it as your textbook cover. Consider inviting expert guides into your work with our templates for peer review, copyediting, accessibility and instructional design, and copyright and licensing.

Once your OER is on solid ground, you will begin your ascent. You will make your OER discoverable to your students and then share it with the greater open education community.

At the base of the mountain, you will marvel at all you have done. Reaching the peak of such a monumental project is no easy task. Remind yourself of this as you move through these final stages. If you feel frustrated or overwhelmed with the minutiae of tasks or immense expert feedback, imagine yourself at the apex. Look across the smaller summits and deep valleys you traversed. Take a breath of the crisp air and know that you have already reached your destination.

Scan the horizon of your publishing destinations and select your next stop below or stay on the trail by following the Pressbooks navigation at the bottom of your screen.
