Publishing Guide

8.1 Publishing Overview

After months of planning, designing, drafting, revising, and polishing, you’ve now completed the essential touches that help shape your OER into a cohesive, accessible, and ethical resource.

Now it’s time to publish.

In this chapter, we’ll walk through the last steps to prepare and publish your Pressbook, so it’s ready to share with your students and others. Whether your audience is your own students or educators around the world, thoughtful publishing ensures your OER is both usable and discoverable.

This chapter is designed to move you one step at a time through the publishing process. Each step (listed below) aligns with one page of this chapter. Most of the steps will need to be completed before your OER undergoes review and copy editing. A couple of the steps will take place after the review and copy editing are complete but before you implement the OER In your course.

Before Undergoing Review and Copy Editing (Due July 1, 2025):

  • Choose and upload your Pressbook cover.
  • Determine and set the Authorship in your Pressbook.
  • Choose the appropriate license and sharing permissions for your Pressbook.
  • Place your Land Acknowledgement in your front matter (optional).
  • Complete the Author Profiles and Positionality Statements in your front matter.
  • Complete an Introduction page for your Pressbook.
  • Complete the Acknowledgements page for your Pressbook.
  • Complete a Style Sheet for your Pressbook for copy editors.

After Undergoing Review and Copy Editing:

  • Complete and place your Accessibility Statement in your front matter.
  • Export your book in various formats (web, PDF, EPUB).

Publishing isn’t just about making your OER public. It’s about positioning it for quality and impact, ensuring it’s accessible, and inviting community engagement.

You’re almost there. Let’s get your OER out into the world!
